Introduction
By mid-1997, the phenomenal increase in numbers of publications dealing with Sathya Sai Baba has brought the total number of books and articles on Sai Baba (in English alone) to close to 400 items (most of them books). Given the different countries in which they are published (mainly India, USA, England, Australia and New Zealand, they are not usually available for browsing in bookstores or even in specialised Sai Bookstores. The choice for old and new devotees thirsting for further (especially updated) knowledge and enlightenment on Sai Baba's teachings is becoming bewildering. Many devotees will have had the experience of hearing of a new promising title and ordering it sight unseen only later to discover that it is not quite what they were expecting. To try to avoid this happening and to attempt to diffuse book knowledge about Sai Baba more efficiently, the present Bibliographical guide sets out to classify approximately 260 selected works by or about Sathya Sai Baba. A brief indication of the contents of a few of them is also offered in order to help prospective readers to choose new books or articles which are most likely to respond to their particular interests and needs.
The guide is divided into five parts. The first four parts are categories of selected items and the fifth is a full bibliographical listing of all the items chosen.
Acknowledgement
With love, to Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba, for leading me along a devious path which has resulted in the honour of serving Him in the preparation of this short reference work. I humbly submit it in His Service.

Part 1 The Sources of Sathya Sai Baba's Teachings
1. Discourses by Sathya Sai Baba
These are very many in number and form the public basis of His teachings. They are frequently quoted and discussed. (The private teachings are those that He gives to individual and groups of devotees in the privacy of the interview room. In many of the books and articles published by devotees they share these with us.)
(i) Sathya Sai Speaks Series
The first series was compiled from the speeches of Sathya Sai Baba from 1953 to 1982, mainly by N. Kasturi. The recently published Volumes XII, XIII, and XIV complete this series (up to 1982). A New Series of Discourses since 1982 is now being published (Vols XVI-XXIV so far).

2. Privately Revealed Messages and Teachings
Many devotees are blessed with the privilege of receiving communications directly from Sai Baba, especially in the form of revelations during meditation and dreams. A supremely privileged few claim to have received whole Discourses in this way or to have had visionary Dialogues with Baba, which they then write down and share with the rest of us. Part 2 Baba as seen and interpreted by His Devotees and Others
The books most useful for new devotees or persons with an interest or curiosity about Sai Baba are those which, as well as giving personal experiences, offer historical details, interviews with other devotees (especially concerning miracles) and some analysis and guidance from the authors from the vantage point of their closer contact or understanding of Baba and His Message. The ones most recommended are those in Groups 1 and 2 below. Those in Group 1 are mainly, but not entirely, by devotees of long standing.
Group 1. The Classic Accounts
In this first section are presented those fascinating classic (but still very relevant) accounts of discovering and following Baba by early devotees and a few others, who were privileged to have very close personal contact with (and attention from) Sathya Sai Baba. Most of these accounts cover the period of the 1960s, 1970s and the early 1980s. Since then, for all but a very few privileged devotees, close contact with Baba, apart from the tiny minority who may be granted a personal interview with Him, has now become a physical impossibility.
Balu, Shakuntala, Living Divinity, London, Sawbridge, 1984.
[A devotee from 1976 until her death, the late Mrs. Balu shares her close observations on Baba and interviews with other devotees, particularly concerning miracles. She also offers descriptions and explanations of Hindu ceremonies in Prasanthi Nilayam and Brindavan. The book contains a very useful Sanskrit-English glossary.]
Balu, V. and Balu, Shakuntala, Divine Glory, Bangalore, S.B.Publications, 1985.
[This interesting book consisting of separate parts by Mr Balu and the late Mrs Balu is full of very special detail and observations, particularly concerning miracles and worship. In their many interviews of Indian devotees, they offer extra detail on Baba's early miracles, updating the accounts of Purnaiya and Kasturi. The book is recommended for both Indian and non-Indian readers.]
Baskin, Diana, Divine Memories of Sathya Sai Baba, San Diego, Birth Day, 1990.
[The writer and her mother were especially close to Baba in the 1970s and 1980s and Diana offers a very special and valuable account of her spiritual path and her relationship with Baba during this time.]
Fanibunda, Eruch B., Vision of the Divine, Bombay, Sri Sathya Sai Books and Publications, 1976.
[With experiences going back to 1970, Fanibunda presents a fascinating early account. Although this erudite classic was aimed principally at an educated Indian readership, with the expansion of devotee numbers throughout the world, it has been widely read in other countries also. It is particularly helpful on matters of worship (like Gayatri Mantra and Linghams). The author is now working on a further volume.]
Ganapati, Ra.:
1985: Baba: Satya Sai, Part I, 2nd ed., Madras, Sai Raj.
[Adapted from an earlier version in Tamil, this first volume recounts (from many sources) the details of Baba's early leelas and miracles.]
1984: Baba: Satya Sai, Part II, Madras, Satya Jyoti.
[adapted from Tamil original, Svami, 1981, or earlier.]
[2nd rev. ed., Madras, Divya Vidya Trust, 1990]
[Particularly recommended reading is this Part II by Ganapati, which is crammed with interesting observations, research and opinions, especially about ashram life, miracles and the spiritual processes through which devotees of Baba are made to pass. The 2nd revised edition (of 500 pages) also includes, as Chapter 46 (pages 111-203), the contents of the separately published Avatar, Verily!, in which Ganapati courageously raises the matter of Baba's critics and detractors.]
1990: Avatar, Verily!, Madras, Divya Vidya Trust, 1990.
[See under Part II above.]
Gokak, V.K., Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba. The Man and the Avatar. An Interpretation, New Delhi, Abhinav, 1983 [1st ed., 1975].
[An early basic account by a very close devotee (from 1971) and a distinguished Indian educationist.]
Haraldsson, Erlendur:
(1987) 'Miracles Are My Visiting Cards'. An Investigative Report on the
Psychic Phenomena Associated with Sathya Sai Baba, London, Century Paperbacks.
[Also marketed for sale in India only by Prasanthi of New Delhi.]
(1996) Modern Miracles, [revised edition], Norwalk, Connecticut, Hastings House.
[The result of research and close contact with Baba carried out over a period of ten years by an Icelandic Professor of Psychology, who had intended to make a scientific examination of Baba's miracles. Although Baba steadfastly refused to submit to measurement, Haraldsson kept doggedly returning to Puttaparthi to observe Baba at close quarters and to interview as many devotees as he could, particularly in connection with the alleged miracles. Amongst his interviewees were a few who had been associated with Baba since the mid-1940's. Haraldsson finally produced a dispassionate yet favourable account of Sai Baba's activities which, while not conceding divine powers to Baba, found no evidence of fraud or trickery. The following telling comment on the revised edition by Professor Hans Eysenck is quoted on the Internet: "I got the strong impression the author longs to be a devotee, but has not yet conquered his sense of ego sufficiently to allow that'' (http://people.delphi.com/bongiovanni/tov.htm). Recent editions are enhanced by an unbiased analysis of the controversial 1992 Television videotape. See also S.P.Ruhela, Sri Sathya Sai Baba and the Press (1972-1996), 1997.]
Hislop, John:
1978: Conversations with Sathya Sai Baba, San Diego, Birth Day.
[Hislop and Murphet were the first westerners to write about Baba's life and work. These 52 unique Question and Answer conversations between Sai Baba and Dr. Hislop were recorded (the first two on a taperecoder, the rest in note form following the conversation) between 1968 and 1978. Since the conversations range over a wide variety ands depth of spiritual topics, they are not recommended as a first book on Baba. For that purpose, many others in this first section would be more suitable, including Hislop's second book, reviewed below. For other readers there is a great deal of food for thought and material for close study in these pages.
Note: There is a revised and enlarged edition published c1996 by the Sri Sathya Sai Books and Publications Trust of Prasanthi Nilayam: Conversations with Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba. This later edition contains, in addition to the 150 pages of the American edition, the 22 conversations included in Hislop's 1985 book, listed below, as well as 3 additional conversations and a posthumous 8-page insert containing 6 letters by Hislop.]
1985: My Baba and I, San Diego, Birth Day.
[For hundreds of thousands of readers, this has been one of the principal introductory books on Sai Baba. It has been translated into many languages. The title was chosen by Baba Himself and the book deals with Hislop's prolonged and intimate experiences of Baba's teachings, some miracles (notably that of the famous Crucifix materialised for Hislop by Baba on Mahasivatratri, 1973), followed by 22 more conversations (January 1978-October 1984), and a treasure trove of letters from Baba to Hislop (and a few from Hislop) written between 1969 and 1983, during the important formative years of the American Sathya Sai Organization, of which Hislop was a prominent figure.]
1997: Seeking Divinity, Tustin, CA, Sathya Sai Society of America.

Murphet, Howard:
1971: Sai Baba: Man of Miracles, London.
[Reprinted by Samuel Weiser, York Beach, 1973 and subsequently]
[Most other devotees' accounts (including those of many Indian writers) of discovering Baba mention coming across or being given a copy of Howard Murphet's seminal 1971 book, Sai Baba. Man of Miracles. The book has been reprinted many times and translated into many other languages. In the 30 years of his devotion to Swami, Murphet, the doyen of non-Indian writers on Sai Baba, has produced 5 important books on Baba. His writing is distinguished by his thoroughness, his deep conviction and love for Baba and his wonderful capacity to write about what he sees, feels and thinks. Murphet's three principal Baba books are listed here as ``classics''; the other two later works appear later in this bibliography.
Man of Miracles was the first important original account of Baba's life and teachings to reach the West. It was the result of four years of visits to the ashram (1966-1970) with his wife Iris. At that time the ashram had a mere 700 Indian residents and the few western visitors and devotees (like the Murphets and the Hislops) were housed in a furnished guest house. From the ensuing very close daily contact with Sai Baba, Murphet crafts a fascinating account of Baba's life, charisma, miracles, and teachings. Murphet's version of the miracles makes sensible use of the work of Kasturi, Purnaiya and others but he also breaks new ground by presenting a great deal of new and more contemporary material gleaned from patient investigating and interviewing by the author.]
1977: Sai Baba Avatar. A New Journey into Power and Glory, San Diego,
Birth Day, 1977.
[Based particularly on an extended stay in Baba's ashrams in 1974, this is a more rounded and deeper analysis of Baba's life, work and significance. There are still many (new) miracles but also a lot of analysis and synthesis.]
1982: Sai Baba. Invitation to Glory, Delhi, MacMillan, 1983.
Republished in USA in 1993 as Walking the Path with Sai Baba, York Beach, Samuel Weiser.
[A more extensive and scholarly but eminently readable introduction to Baba and the spiritual path, with less emphasis on the miracles. Murphet attempts to define Baba's place in the history of the world and offers links between His teachings and those of other religions.]

Rodriguez, Birgitte, Glimpses of the Divine. Working with the Teachings of Sai Baba, York Beach, Samuel Weiser, 1993.
[After a long spiritual search, the writer found Baba in 1981 and became a resident at Prasanthi Nilayam. She gives us the benefit of her deep spiritual experience, her years of residence and her very keen and original observations. Extremely readable and helpful.]

Eminently readable.]
1985: Spirit and the Mind, San Diego, Birth Day.
[Aimed at a much more restricted readership of health professionals, this very serious work is also widely appreciated by educated devotees everywhere. In it, Sandweiss presents his view of spiritual reality, particularly in healing and harnesses this to propounding the need for healing professionals, notably psychiatrists, psychologists and other therapists, to take into account the spiritual dimension of their patients. He also stresses the importance of the teachings of Sathya Sai Baba.]

[In spite of the recent publication of this lengthy account by a distinguished Indian journalist, the author's association with Baba goes back to 1971. The careful investigation of a large number of miracles, both early and recent, takes up the major part of the book (pages 61-278).
Schulman, Arnold, Baba, New York, Viking Press, 1971.

Group 2. Other Basic Accounts
The classic accounts refer to a very close relationship with Baba mainly in the days when devotee numbers were not very high. This is obviously no longer possible for most devotees. However, in the flood of books and booklets of the past ten years or so, some writers offer evidence of a similar close contact or of a profound study of Baba's teachings and, like the classic accounts above, give us the most important contemporary insights and information about Baba and His Work.
Bailey, D., Journey to Love, Prasanthi Nilayam, Sai Towers, 1996.
[The thrilling and amusing story of a gifted and corpulent British concert pianist's meteoric rise to close contact and favour with Baba between 1994 and 1995. Within 18 months of discovering Baba and totally surrendering to Him, Bailey is rewarded by Baba's love and favours, in return for organising and directing musical concerts at Puttaparthi and speaking to an audience of 200,000. Baba also found Bailey a devotee wife, Faye.]
Bhatia, Dr. Naresh, The Dreams and Realities Face to Face with God, Prasanthi Nilayam, (Private), 1994.
[An amazing story of close devotion and attachment to Baba by the Doctor now in charge of the Blood Bank at Baba's Super Speciality Hospital. Part 4 Delving Deeper into Baba
1. Miracles
Since they are such an important part of the public perception of Sai Baba, and since most books about Baba inevitably deal with some or many miracles, it may be of interest to some devotees and other readers to have a separate list of prime (though not always primary) sources, although they have already been listed above in different sections. The authors of the following books are more conscientious than others in listing and describing miracles performed by Sai Baba. In addition, they also interview those who who benefitted from the miracles, or, particularly in the case of the early miracles, others who witnessed them.

Ruhela examines the writings of groups of professional writers, like sociologists, philosophers, psychologists, educationists, etc. His conclusions are that while academic interest in Baba so far has been rather sparse, the weight of serious writing and evidence is sufficient to establish Baba's divinity to any intellectual with an open mind.]
Ruhela, S.P., Sri Sathya Sai Baba and the Press (1972-1996), New Delhi, MD Publications, 1997.
[Nearly three quarters of this interesting and necessary book deals with media attention during the 1990s, thus reflecting the enormous increase in interest in Sai Baba in the last ten years or so. Several of the articles from the Indian Press reproduced and critically commented on are of a negative or denigratory nature, particularly those emanating from an influential group called The Indian Rationalists. The 40 pages devoted to the extensive Press coverage of the so-called murder attempt in 1993 contain such a bewildering variety of theories and 'facts', that the reader will probably conclude that what happened was not a botched murder attempt but the escalation of petty jealousies between local devotees, tragically magnified by the panic-stricken reaction of the local police. The book serves to remind non-Indians in particular that in His own country, Baba, although immensely popular, is not held in universal esteem, especially by the media.]
